Hi fams.
Lately, we have experience a sudden increase in the number of science inventions on our planet. unlike the early 19's when you needed a horse or camel to travel long distance. Even fireworks or a messenger to pass your messages across. The advancement in science and technology as brought us great fortune. But with the vast number of technology that we have got, and as a curious scientist that we are. Can we reason out or conclude the most important or greatest of these inventions.
hmm.
If I were to ask you what invention would you go for?
Is it an Aeroplane? Remember your dreams to travel abroad in less than 3 hours can't be accomplished without this machine
Electric cooker? This makes your cooking easier and neat with cheap electricity
Electricity? Without it non of your home appliance will work. Even other electrical engines are useless
Battery? Remember that's what your cell phone is using now. And it saves fuel.
Cell phone? How do you make calls without this device!
Computer? King of information. You would loose the world as a global village if you destroy this.
Space ship? Our hope of colonizing other planets including mars will be nothing without this.
Or the Atomic bomb? King of destruction. This is what most countries used to rank themselves as powerful or great.
Now. It sounds as if all this machine are important but am not giving up yet. We must conclude on the one that is greatest
If we really want to get the most important invention we need a reference point. what I mean is we need a scale to judge our conclusion. For example if we want to measure the weight of a bucket containing water we need a weighing scale but if we want to measure the volume of this same bucket we would not need a weighing balance but a volumetric flask or volume jug. Therefore the results we get will depend on the scale or device we used to measure.
Now if we conclude based on the invention that is inevitable or that we used everyday we may likely go for.
Cellphone
Computer
Vehicle
Otherwise we may judge based on the most fascinating and wonderful. we may think of artificial intelligence, artificial kidney, robot, the GPS and so on.
We may also love to conclude based on the inventions that proved most difficult to invent. Maybe we would go for the Aeroplane that took almost 40 years or the light bulb that took close to 100 attempt.
If we decide to conclude based on the most complicated machines and inventions we may likely have to choose between the early computers and this days industrial machines. This machines can take up to a complete house.
So now what do we go for. The invention I suggest may not be what you think as the greatest. the reason is because the scale we are using to measure our verdict will determine our result and our final conclusion. Therefore let's also think about it. If we say the battery is the most important. what will be its use without cellphone or where to put it. Okay maybe you decided the cellphone is the most important? What will you do with your phone without the internet. Hmm did you just say the internet is the most important? Okay maybe your phone would have to take you to work? You actually need the motor car to be transported. was that why you said it's the most important? I think you would have to starve without industrial machineries. How would you process your foods. with the increase in population, manual processing can not feed even quarter of the population. Finally you thought industrial machines is the most important. That means you would just have to eat but you forgot your health right? Doctors would need medical technologies for efficiency. Without it a lot of lives will be lost. Lastly you stood firm and say "medical inventions are the most important" Would you be stuck on earth forever? How would those your internet even work without space stations and satellite. You would need space ships and shuttles to launch this.
If I continue like this I may end up with thousands of words. I think science is more like a web where all fields are interwoven. Even as the inventions are invented at different times they all have something in common which is the curiosity of the inventors. All inventions are result of a proper and curious look into already existing inventions. But what invention is the first in the world? That sounds like a topic for subsequent posts.

Wallace H Carothers. On February 28, 1935, Gerard Berchet under the direction of carothers, produce a half-ounce polymer from hexamethyleneduamine and adipic acid, creating polymide 6-6, the substance that has come to be known nylon.
